Sleep Benefits of 5-HTP Supplements

Man sleeping - by Arthur Savary

Tossing and turning, sleepless nights, waking up exhausted and anxious knowing you face another work day… insomnia is incredibly frustrating, with the lack of sleep affecting every aspect of life.  5-HTP is a natural remedy that may help you sleep deeper and stay asleep longer.

5-Hydroxytryptophan, commonly known as 5-HTP is a naturally occurring amino acid that works in the brain and central nervous system to aid in the production of the chemicals serotonin and melatonin, two of the most important brain chemicals for regulating the sleep/wake cycle.  This means that supplementing 5-HTP will boost both serotonin and melatonin.  A number of studies done over the last two decades found 5-HTP helps with insomnia and improves overall sleep quality. (1)  It is not found in food but is created from another amino acid, tryptophan, which can be found in high-protein animal foods like meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, and eggs.  Supplements of 5-HTP are typically produced from a woody African shrub called Griffonia simplicifolia, which seeds contain 20% of the amino acid.

Research has shown that 5-HTP can assist in shortening the time it takes to fall asleep and increase sleep amounts with fewer side effects than sleep medications.   5-HTP can be beneficial in easing symptoms of stress and anxiety, which also interfere with sleep patterns.  This supplement has also been used for depression, anxiety, headaches, fibromyalgia, obesity, PMS, ADHD, and Parkinson’s.

Currently, there is no recommended daily allowance for 5-HTP.  Most individuals take between 25 and 100 milligrams per day, starting with a lower dose of 25 mg and moving up to a higher dose as needed.   Murphy’s Natural Hemp Sleep Tincture contains the perfect combination of compounds that will assist you in getting a good night’s sleep.  In addition, because of the water-soluble properties of  Murphy’s Natural Hemp, lower dosages of the tincture will provide the same effects as products that are not water-based.  This video proves the vast difference between our water-based tinctures and other popular oil-based or water-soluble CBD products on the market.

Before taking any supplement, be sure to consult with your physician.  Documentation indicates that the use of 5-HTP supplements should not be combined with antidepressants or MAO inhibitors.  You should not take with ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, common in many over-the-counter cold remedies. (1)
